Old School with a new Twist

Baby's Stunt Double

Baby's Stunt Double

To say that newborn photography is my thing would be a lie. Don't get me wrong, I love newborn babies, the smell is like no other and each time I have the opportunity to hold one I am transformed into an emotional, blubbering idiot (Tequila anyone?). These tiny humans have powers, magical powers and should be approached with caution. Beware of the babies, they, like all young tiny things, infect your focus and steal your thoughts. Who wouldn't want something so small, helpless and incredibly infectious of their own? Maybe just one more to add to the crew? C'mon, I'm old and lazy. Think again. So, I do very few newborn photos. However, grand babies are totally within my rights to exploit.

The little fella above was two days old when I stole his likeness with my camera. It was not a planned shoot but rather just a quick visit. I grabbed the closest blanket, stuffed it under a light. (it was night so the windows were not available) grabbed a stunt double to get my settings dialed in, and away we went. No planned wardrobe, background or theme. Just a quick little snap of wee Ronan. Yay!

Not the Mama

Not the Mama

It wasn't until I pulled up my pix in Photoshop that I realized I wanted to add some nostalgia to them. Todays portraits have moved too far away from the images of my youth. Remember the cross-stich patterns of those days? They had not just the date of birth, but the time and the weight? I remember those, kinda. I just wanted to bring that into my photo, so I sought out to create just that.

Hopefully, you find them as useful as I did. I love what they do. When you look at the photo, you know that the baby is fresh to the world. and not a month old bully stealing the limelight.

Feel free to use them as you wish. You will need Photoshop to use the .psd files (Located top right of this page.. Just click the button) and in there you will be able to change the color to match your palette (a quick bucketfill after a color selection with the eyedropper) Or feel free to use the PNG's below. They will work perfectly if you need to photograph a baby boy born Nov 25th at 1:48AM who was 8lbs 14oz.. Otherwise use the PSD's linked in the buttons.
